25 Pretty graph colouring problems

چکیده
Even if there is nothing more to say about the 4-colour-problem, there are very many easily formulated unsolved graph colouring problems left. We have selected a list of 25 pretty problems. If a class of graphs is closed under minors (deletions and contractions), is the maximum chromatic number of graphs in the class equal to the largest order of a complete graph in the class? Assume that all vertex-critical induced proper subgraphs of a vertex-critical graph G are complete. Is G complete, an odd cycle or an odd cycle complement? What is the chromatic number k of the graph whose vertices are all points in the plane, with two vertices joined by an edge when they are of distance 1? It is known that 4 k 7.

Graph Colouring Problems and Their Applications in Scheduling
Graph colouring and its generalizations are useful tools in modelling a wide variety of scheduling and assignment problems. In this paper we review several variants of graph colouring, such as precolouring extension, list colouring, multicolouring, minimum sum colouring, and discuss their applications in scheduling.
متن کاملThe complexity of tropical graph homomorphisms
A tropical graph (H, c) consists of a graph H and a (not necessarily proper) vertex-colouring c of H. For a fixed tropical graph (H, c), the decision problem (H, c)-Colouring asks whether a given input tropical graph (G, c1) admits a homomorphism to (H, c), that is, a standard graph homomorphism of G to H that also preserves vertex-colours. We initiate the study of the computational complexity ...
متن کاملTopological Colouring Bounds and Graph Structure
Lovász invoked topological colouring bounds in proving Kneser’s Conjecture. Subsequently, numerous applications of topological techniques to graph colouring problems have arisen. However, even today, little is known about how to construct a graph with a particular topological colouring bound, or about the structure of such graphs. The aim of this thesis is to remedy this deficit. First, we will...
متن کاملAn Analysis of an Optimal Bit Complexity Randomised Distributed Vertex Colouring
1.1 The Problem Let G = (V,E) be a simple undirected graph. A vertex colouring of G assigns colours to each vertex in such a way that neighbours have different colours. In this paper we discuss how efficient (time and bits) vertex colouring may be accomplished by exchange of bits between neighbouring vertices. The distributed complexity of vertex colouring is of fundamental interest for the stu...
متن کاملTackling the edge dynamic graph colouring problem with and without future adjacency information
Many real world operational research problems, such as frequency assignment and exam timetabling, can be reformulated as graph colouring problems (GCPs). Most algorithms for theGCPoperate under the assumption that its constraints are fixed, allowing us to model the problem using a static graph. However, in many real-world cases this does not hold and it is more appropriate to model problems wit...
